Twelve questions that go past small talk

The difference between "how was your day" and a question that actually opens something up is usually one word. Here is what to ask instead.

Most couples do not run out of things to say. They run out of questions that lead anywhere. "How was your day" is a fine question, but it has a default answer β€” fine, busy, the usual β€” and once the default is out, the conversation is over before it started.

The fix is smaller than it sounds. A question opens something up when it asks about a specific moment rather than a whole day, or about a feeling rather than a fact. Compare "how was work" with "what was the most annoying part of today". The second one is impossible to answer with one word.

Ask about a moment, not a period

Days are too big to summarize. Moments are easy to describe, and they carry the feeling with them. These four questions all narrow the frame:

  • What was the best five minutes of your day?
  • Was there a moment today you wanted to tell me about and then forgot?
  • When did you feel most like yourself this week?
  • What is something you noticed today that nobody else would have?

Ask about the inside, not the outside

Factual questions get factual answers. If you want to know how someone is actually doing, ask about the interior β€” what they wanted, avoided, or worried about.

  • What have you been overthinking lately?
  • Is there something you have been putting off telling me?
  • What is something you are looking forward to that you have not mentioned?
  • When did you last feel proud of yourself?

Ask about the two of you

These are the ones couples skip for years because they feel too direct. They are also the ones that change things fastest.

  • What do I do that makes you feel closest to me?
  • Is there something you need more of from me right now?
  • What is a version of our life together you daydream about?
  • What do you think I worry about that I have never said out loud?

One rule that makes all of them work

Ask the follow-up. The first answer is usually the polished one β€” the second answer is the real one. "Say more about that" does most of the work here, and it costs you nothing.

A good question is not clever. It is specific, and then it waits.

You do not need all twelve tonight. Pick one, ask it while you are doing something else β€” driving, cooking, walking β€” and let the answer take as long as it takes.

Try it with your partner
