Fifteen cheap dates that do not feel cheap
A good date is mostly about attention, not budget. Here is a list you can work through over the next few months.
Expensive dates are easy to plan and easy to sit through without saying anything real. Cheap dates force you to bring something yourself, which is usually why they end up being the ones you remember.
Out of the house
- Pick a bus or tram line neither of you has taken and ride it to the end.
- Go to a market with a small budget each and buy the other person one surprise.
- Find the highest point in your city you can reach for free and go at sunset.
- Walk a neighbourhood you never go to and pick which building you would live in.
- Go to a museum in the last hour before closing, when it is quiet.
- Swap cameras or phones for a walk and photograph what the other person would miss.
- Take a long drive with a playlist you build in the car.
At home
- Cook something from whichever country you both most want to visit.
- Recreate your first date as accurately as you can.
- Blind-taste something cheap β supermarket chocolate, tea, olive oil.
- Build a playlist together where you each add a song the other has never heard.
- Write down five things you want to do together this year and put it somewhere you will see it.
- Watch the first episode of something neither of you has seen and quit if it is bad.
- Play a game β cards, a quiz, anything with stakes low enough to laugh about.
- Sit somewhere with no screens and answer one question you have never asked each other.
Budget buys you a nicer room. It does not buy you a better conversation.
One thing that makes any of these better
Decide in advance who is planning it, and let that person actually plan it. Half the friction in date night is two people politely refusing to choose. Alternate weeks, and give the planner real authority β including the right to pick something the other one would not have.
